EMF Electromagnetic measurement and assessments in Mississauga andToronto

Measuring EMF in Your Home

Are you concerned about the potential health risks of Wi-Fi networks, cell tower electrosmog, dirty electricity, ground currents, and power lines? Be advised that conventional house inspections do not include EMF measurements of any kind. These are performed specifically by companies who specialize in this field.

Our Housecheck service provides EMF home inspections in the greater Toronto area and all over Ontario. We survey existing or pre-purchase houses. We inspect houses, apartments, townhouses, and condominiums. A typical inspection includes examinations of the entire dwelling from an electromagnetic standpoint. We use professional meters and measuring devices to find out where the “hot spots” are.

Our team has a wealth of research, and is constantly taking courses and training to keep up on the latest in EMF information. We are closely associated with the EMF filter manufacturer and with a prominent University professor who is at the forefront of EMF research. If you have health concerns about overhead power lines, mobile phone masts or about the invisible EMFs of your electrical appliances, then this may be for you. Employers may wish to evaluate employee workspaces for Health and Safety purposes. We will identify magnetic fields, radio frequencies, and dirty electricity.

For our surveys, we use professional EMF meters to track EMFs to their source. We measure magnetic, electrical, and radio frequencies. First we will give you a verbal summary of our findings. Then we’ll provide the results of the survey in a written report. It will show the location and intensity of harmful EMFs within the property and give practical steps on how they can be eliminated or avoided at minimal cost. One of the solutions we will recommend is the installation of Graham-Stetzer filters. They filter out much of the dangerous high frequency energy. We’re getting reports of health changing results from our clients.

The house contains a network of wires throughout the walls. You're likely sleeping next to these wires. In addition, various devices and appliances, such as TVs, cordless phones, wifi routers and computers may contribute to electrosensitives.

The EMF guidelines provided by the government are outdated by decades. In contrast, the exposure limits established by Building Biology specialists are more realistic. We'll show you how to aim for these levels.

The cost of a survey depends on the complexity of the situation, size of property and distance from our office in the GTA. Note, we view the GTA (Greater Toronto area) as “local.” EMF surveys start from as little as $300 and neighbouring properties may be able to share the cost of a survey.

Dr. Mercola on Electro Magnetic Fields (EMF) and which of them can be hazardous to our health.

Drmercola

Dr. Mercola on EMF. A very worthy read. (Abridged)

Can electromagnetic fields (EMF) from power lines, home wiring, radar, computers and appliances cause brain tumors, leukemia, birth defects, miscarriages, chronic fatigue, headaches, cataracts, heart problems, stress. nausea, chest pain, forgetfulness, cancer and other health problems?

Many experts are convinced that the threat is real.

  • Dr. David Carpenter, Dean at the School of Public Health, State University of New York: "up to 30% of all childhood cancers come from exposure to EMFs."
  • The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA): "There is reason for concern," advising "prudent avoidance".
  • Martin Halper, EPA Director of Analysis and Support: "I have never seen a set of epidemiological studies that remotely approached the weight of evidence that we're seeing with EMFs. Clearly there is something here."
  • Paul Brodeur in the New Yorker Magazine, June 1989, and Time Magazine 1990: these articles had a catalytic effect on scientists, reporters and concerned people throughout the world.
  • US Department of Energy (November 1989): "It has now become generally accepted that there are, indeed, biological effects due to field exposure."

Housing Concerns

In addition to the long-term health concerns, buying a house with high fields will be an economic disaster. In a few years, when power line radiation is as well known as asbestos and radon, a house with high fields will be practically impossible to sell. Already there are hundreds of lawsuits regarding EMFs and property devaluation.

Power Lines

All power lines radiate electromagnetic fields. The question is: how much are the power lines near YOUR home radiating?

Transformers

A key component of a utility's electrical distribution network depends upon numerous, small transformers mounted on power poles. A transformer looks like a small metal trash can, usually cylindrical... Many people don't realize that when they see a transformer, the power line feeding the transformer is 4000 to 13,800 volts.

The transformer then reduces the voltage to the 120/240 volts needed by nearby homes. Since these transformers can be seen in almost every neighborhood, they are a source of concern.

Home Wiring

If your home has high EMF readings, it is important to determine the sources of the EMF so that remedial action can be taken ...

Computers

The Swedish safety standard, effective 711/90, specifies a maximum of 0.25 mG at 50 cm from the display. Many US manufactured computers have EMFs of 5 - 100 mG at this distance. And know this too: the screens placed over monitors do NOT block EMFs. Not even a lead screen will block ELF and VLF magnetic fields.

Electric Clocks

Electric clocks have a very high magnetic field, as much as 5 to 10 mG up to three feet away...

Fluorescent Lights

Fluorescent lights produce much more EMFs than incandescent bulbs...

Microwave Ovens and Radar

Microwave ovens and radar from military installations and airports emit two types of radiation -- microwave and ELF. Microwaves are measured in milliwatt per centimeter squared (mW/cm2) As of 1/1/93, the U.S. safety limit for microwave exposure is 1 mW/cm2, down from a previous 10 mW/cm2. The Russian safety limit is .01 mW/cm2. All microwave ovens leak and exceed the Russian safety limit. In addition, recent Russian studies have shown that normal microwave cooking coverts food protein molecules into carcinogenic substances.

When measuring microwaves from military and airport radar sources, 100% accurate readings can only be found with extremely expensive digital peak-hold meters...

Telephones and Answering Machines

Telephones can emit surprisingly strong EMFs, especially from the handset. This is a problem because we hold the telephone so close to our head. Measure the EMF's from the ear piece and the mouth piece before buying a phone.

Some brands emit no measurable fields and others emit strong fields that travel several inches....right into your brain. Answering machines, particular those with adapter plugs (mini-transformers), give off high levels of EMFs.

Electric Razors and Hair Dryers

Electric razors and hair dryers emit EMFs as high as 200 to 400 mG...

Prudent Avoidance

Electricity is an inseparable part of our modern day society. This means that EMFs will continue to be all around us. But as Discover Magazine postulated, aside from making our life easier, is electricity also making our lives shorter?

Most experts agree that limited, non-chronic exposure to EMFs is not a threat. For example, it is probably acceptable for a person to be near a toaster in the morning.

BUT, it is not advisable for a person to sleep under an electric blanket, up close, live near a powerline/substation, and sleep in a room where the power enters the home. This person is under an extreme case of chronic exposure. This condition, unfortunately, applies to millions of Americans.

If you wish to follows the EPA's advice and practice "prudent avoidance" then the following advice is offered:

  • Measure your home, work and school environments
  • Don't let your children play near power lines, transformers, radar domes and microwave towers.
  • Avoid areas where the field is above 1 mG. Measure the EMFs from appliances both when they are operating and when they are turned off. Some appliances (like TVs) are still drawing current even when they are off.
  • Don't sleep under an electric blanket or on a waterbed. If you insist on using these, unplug them before going to bed (don't just turn it off). Even though there is no magnetic field when they are turned off, there may still be a high electric field.
  • Don't sit too close to your TV set. Distance yourself at least 6 feet away. Use a Gauss meter to help you decide where it is safe to sit.
  • Rearrange your office and home area so that you are not exposed to EMFs from the sides/backs of electric appliances and computers. In the home, it is best that all major electrical appliances, such as computers, TVs, refrigerators etc, be placed up against outside walls. That way you are not creating an EMF field in the adjoining room.
  • Don't sit too close to your computer. Computer monitors vary greatly in the strength of their EMFs, so you should check yours with a meter. Don't stand close to your microwave oven. Move all electrical appliances at least 6 feet from your bed. Eliminate wires running under your bed. Eliminate dimmers and 3-way switches.
  • Be wary of cordless appliances such as electric toothbrushes and razors. You may choose not to wear a quartz-analog watch because it radiates pulsating EMFs along your acupuncture meridians.
  • An older mechanical windup watch would be an acceptable alternative. It is also recommended to wear as little jewelry as possible and to take it off at night. Many people have metal sensitivity which can be aggravated by placing it right on the skin. Measure with a gauss meter to be sure.

And last, but not least, always always always remember that EMFs pass right through walls. The EMF you are reading on your Gauss meter could be radiating from the next room...or from outside your home.

Additional Radiation Info:

Eyeglass frames should ideally be made from plastic with no wires in them, otherwise they can serve as an antenna to focus the radio and cellular phone waves directly into your brain.

What EMF Level Is Safe?

There's a heated debate as to what electromagnetic field (EMF) level is considered safe. Since the experts have not come to an consensus, you'll have to decide for yourself... Many government and utility documents report the usual ambient level of 60-Hz magnetic field to be 0.5 mG.

Thus, any reading higher than 0.5 mG is above the "usual" ambient exposure. Many experts and public officials, as well as the few governments that have made an effort to offer public protection, have adopted the 3 mG cutoff point. The EPA has proposed a safety standard of 1 mG. Sweden has set a maximum safety limit of 1 mG.

Dr. Robert Becker, an MD who has been studying the effects of EMFs for 20 years, states a lmG safety limit in his book Cross Currents. When electricians try to solve a magnetic field problem they do their best to drop the level to 1 mG or below.

Dr. Nancy Wertheimer, a Ph.D. epidemiologist who has been studying EMFs for 20 years, has been looking at the epidemiological data in a different way -- she is trying to associate EMF levels with health rather than disease. The level she is coming up with is a cut off of 1 mG. Russian researchers claim that 1/1000ths of a mG should be the standard.

The BioElectric Body believes that there are several stages of health between "optimum wellness", "degenerative disease" and "Cancer". Thus, we maintain our own living and sleeping quarters at 0.5mG and below.

Dr. Mercola recommends measuring EMFs in the home. Did you know that we can measure them for you for less than 1/4 the cost of the meters needed to do the job, and guide you through the process of reducing your health risks?

We conduct EMF home inspections in Toronto, GTA, Hamilton, Burlington, Oakville, Missauga.

Are you getting abnormally high electricity bills? Maybe your smart meter is to blame.

080414-meter
Some residential customers have been complaining that their electricity bills are higher after smart meters were installed in their homes. This could mean that the new wireless meters are not reading accurately.

Smart meters have been controversial for a number of reasons, especially amid concerns that they emit harmful EMF radiation that could affect the health of the people living in the home.

Are you concerned about Smart Meters and other EMF sources in your home or office? Contact us for a home inspection or office inspection.

We conduct EMF inspections in Toronto, Hamilton, Burlington, Oakville, Mississauga, and Niagara.

Definition: Varietal refers to a wine made from a grape variety like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot or Chardonnay.

Wine is a cultural thing. The interesting rituals involved in choosing a wine, opening the bottle, swirling, tasting and food-pairing.

... but we don't like to take wine too seriously in a stuffy way - it's just a lot of fun and the subject gets more interesting every time we dig some more.

If you have a very basic knowledge of wine, this section may be for you.
Theoretically, wine can be made from just about anything that ferments. But let's begin with the kind made with grapes.

Most grapes used for winemaking are from one of two basic families: Vitis Vinifera, (originally from Europe, know as noble grapes) or Vitis Labrusca, (originating in the new world). The varieties of grapes in these two families are in the thousands.

Here's a selective list.

Wine Varietals  (classic "textbook" tasting characteristics in brackets)

Barbera
Very widely planted in Italy; more than Sangiovese and Nebbiolo, Barbera is a grape known for its tarry character and low-tannins.

Cabernet Franc  (herbal notes / tobacco)
Closely related to the familiar Cabernet Sauvignon, this grape is being used in the states to make some very interesting wines. It is traditionally used in France as a blending partner in wines, particularly to modulate the character of Bordeaux wines.

Cabernet Sauvignon  (black currants, cassis, cherry, cedar and spice)
There can be some confusion for a novice. In the US, people refer to a wine as a Cabernet, or a Pinot Noir. This is the varietal. In France, one refers to a nice Bordeaux, meaning a wine which is usually composed mainly of Cabernet Sauvignon, but is grown in the region called Bordeaux. Often called the king of wine grapes, this varietal is rich in tannins, and provides the strength and complexity necessary to make a wine that's good for aging in a cellar.

Chardonnay  (wide variations; vanilla, tropical fruit, nuts, subtle apples and butter)
It is the primary white wine of Burgundy. One of the more popular wines in America.  This is the grape likely responsible for opening America's eyes to the possibility of a wine other than "Chablis" or "Burgundy." Other than its home in Burgundy, the best Chards come from Washington State, Niagara Ontario and the cooler regions of California. You can find it un-oaked, allowing the native characteristics of the grape to shine, or aged in French oak barrels or American oak.  French oak imparts a milder flavor than American. Watch for distinct aromas and flavors of butter in most Chardonnays.

Charbono
A red-wine grape found in small vineyards in California. Could be a clone of the Douce Noir grape found in the Savoie region of France, better known as the Dolcetto grape widely grown in northern Italy.

Chenin Blanc  (muted; orange, pine, bread)
With a light fruity character, this is the main component of Vouvray, and is grown in California, South Africa (it's called Steen there) and the Loire Valley in France. This is one white wine grape that is capable of showing well at an age of more than several years.

Cinsault
A close relative of Pinotage. It does well in Southern France, Lebanon, Australia and South Africa, and is used most commonly for blending with more robust grapes to change the character of the wine.

Gamay  (strawberries and raspberries)
The primary grape in red wine from the Beaujolais region of France, it's more fruity, less tannic, and not as "big" as a grape like Cabernet. Not only a fun new wine, be sure to get to know the older Gamays from Beaujolais. They're wonderful.

Gewürztraminer  (lychees, grapefruit rind)
This grape has made a significant foray into the North American market. It's considered a "hip" choice. The name means "spice" in German. It can have a peppery, floral, or nutty character. Originating in Germany and Austria, it's also grown in Italy, California, Niagara Canada and Australia.

Grenache  (raspberry)
Grenache is often used for rosé wine, and is common in France, Spain and California. Light in tannins, it produces a lighter-bodied, fruity wine.

Grüner Veltliner  (citrus, grapefruit with floral aroma)
Gruvee!!! A very exciting white-wine grape grown in Austria. This is the "new white" wine you should get to know! These are fresh, fruity, whites. Also known as Veltliner.

Merlot  (plums, blueberries and cherries)
Merlot has become hugely popular as a wine of its own, though traditionally, it has been used for blending with other grapes to shape the character of a wine. This is a friendly wine to everyone's palate, even a newcomer to the wine scene. It can offer up some rich berry, honey, or mint, and is not as tannic as a Cabernet Sauvignon.

Malbec (ripe berries, powerful fruity flavors)
This grape variety has been an important blending partner in Bordeaux along with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and others. It has become the most popular red in Argentina, and now Chile is also getting in the act. It’s an amazing red! Deep color, ripe berry aromas and powerful fruity flavors.

Muscadelle (perfume, acacia)
A white grape variety from the Bordeaux region of France. Perfume and acacia aromas and flavors.  It is a blending partner with Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc in Graves and surrounding appellations, most famously in Sauternes. This grape matures quickly and is quickly affected by noble rot (botrytis).  It is not among the Muscat family.

Muscat
This is a very grapey-tasting grape that doesn't ripen easily. Muscat is the grape used for Asti Spumanti, the sparkling wine from Italy. Note that Muscat has nothing to do with Muscatel.

Nebbiolo
Nebbiolo is the predominant grape in the Piedmont area of Italy, where Barolo is made. It's also grown in Switzerland, California and Australia. Its main characteristics would be that of tannic, prune, and chocolate.

Petite Syrah
Often confused with /Syrah/Shiraz (more on this in a later piece) the petite syrah typically makes a tannic wine which can be chocolaty and/or smoky, while still possessing some rich fruit.

Pinot Blanc
Predominant in Alsace, Italy, and Austria, this grape suggests some of the character of Chardonnay, and is often used to make sparkling wines. It is related to the Pinot Gris.

Pinot Gris / Pinot Grigio  (minerals, orange rind, pine)
Pinot Gris and Pinot Grigio are actually the same white grape. Two different names. In Italy and California it's known as Grigio, and in Oregon and France it's known as Gris. Other regions use the terms interchangeably. This is a mutation of the Pinot Noir grape, which is red. Pinot Blanc is not the same as Pinot Gris or Pinot Grigio - it is a further mutation of this varietal. The Italian version is typically dry and light, with a mineral taste to it. California's output can be richer in flavor, but still have the mineral taste. Often, they finish with a lemony or citrus flavor. French Pinot Gris wines usually come from the Alsace region. These are more fruity and flowery, though they still have that mineral aroma. Flavors can range from peach to grapefruit to melon. It's also known as Rulander or Grauer Burgunder. It can be used to create both fine whites and rosés.

Pinot Noir  (cherries, raspberries and smoke)
The premier red-wine grape of the Burgundy region of France. It produces a red wine that is light in color compared to other reds. Also grown in cooler regions of North America. Excellent Pinot Noir is coming out of Oregon and Ontario Canada. Characteristics: cherry, mint and berries, such as raspberry or strawberry.

Pinotage
Developed in the early twentieth century and used primarily in South African wines, Pinotage is a mix between pinot noir and Cinsault. The grape makes a wine that is hearty, with a fruity and spice taste.

Riesling  (citrus, apricots, peaches and floral)
Riesling deserves another try. Gone are the days when they were all quite sweet and one-dimensional.  Look for the rebirth of this fine varietal, especially out of Canada!  The Riesling grape is believed to be indigenous to Austria and Germany, and has been planted there for almost 1,000 years. Riesling does very well in central Europe, Canada and in California, and is also grown in Australia and New Zealand. Riesling is affected by where it is grown - New World Rieslings (California and Canada) are dry and have the taste of melons, while German Rieslings are more tart like Grapefruit. Riesling goes very well with oriental dishes. It also goes well with seafood of all types, and is one of the few wines that goes well with chocolate. It is also great on its own, as a dessert wine. In Niagara Ontario, Riesling is used in the creation of Ice Wines, as are Vidal grapes.

Sangiovese (cherries, raisins, earth and violets)
A red-wine grape grown in the Tuscany region of Italy. Used to make Chianti and other Tuscan reds. Some versions (clones) include Sangiovese Grosso, and Sangiovese Piccolo. Also grown in California where it is used to produce up-and-coming medium-bodied reds with rich cherry or plum-like tones.

Sangiovese Grosso
See Sangiovese. Also known as the Prugnolo Gentile grape. Blended with Canaiolo Nero to create Chianti. The Brunello variety is used for the dark red, slow-maturing Brunello di Montalcino.

Sauvignon Blanc  (cut grass, lemon and herbs)
A popular alternative to Chardonnay. It makes a crisp, light wine. Sauvignon Blanc has been produced for many years in France, and came to California in the late 1800's. Sauvignon Blanc has herbal flavors, olive and a soft, smoky flavor. They can range from sweet to dry, but are typically quite light. American Sauvignon Blanc is often quite prominently "grassy" whereas the Canadian and New Zealand versions are often more balanced and pleasant. This is also a principle variety in Sauternes, the elegant dessert wine from the area of the same name in Bordeaux. The other blending partners are Semillon (see below) and a bit of Muscadelle. The finest of all are from South Styria (Süd Steiermark), Austria.

Semillon  (figs, lemon and honey)
This is an early-ripening grape which is often blended with Sauvignon Blanc. It is the primary grape in White Bordeaux wines, notably also in Sauternes. It also has a grassy character. As table wines, some interesting versions have been coming out Australia and New Zealand these days.

Seyval
Seyval is an "East Coast US and Canada" wine, and is one of the most widely planted grapes east of the Rocky Mountains in the US. Wines from this grape can have melon-like flavors, as well as grassy/hay overtones.

Syrah / Shiraz  (prunes, spices and berries)
It is known in France and California as Syrah, and in Australia as Shiraz. The Rhône region of France has grown it for centuries.  You can get some very nice Rhône wines that are 100% Syrah. Syrah can possess a mineral, blueberry, or sometimes spicy/peppery flavor. Some remarkable wines are being produced in Australia, Ontario and South Africa with this grape.

Tempranillo  (virtually no fruit, leather, spice, raisins)
Most commonly from the Rioja region of Spain. We simply love this varietal. It is a pleasant sipping wine and is very nice with roasted meats.

Viognier  (apricots, peaches and wood)
This rare varietal originated in Condrieu, on the northern Rhône. It is predominantly found in the Rhône valley and California.  In addition to the textbook flavors noted above, you may also detect aromas or flavors of spice, floral, citrus and apple. It typically produces medium bodied wines with relatively high acids and fruit. Viognier can produce fairly complex wines.

Zinfandel  (blackberry jam and black pepper)
An important red-wine grape grown mostly in California. This variety produces robust reds and is also made into the popular blush wines (white zinfandel). It may have been developed from an earlier varietal from southern Italy. We heartily recommend red Zin as a great alternative to Cabernet Sauvignon because you can get good value for the money. It's spicy, peppery qualities and dark color make it a pleaser.

Zweigelt
Or "Blauer Zweigelt" is a red varietal that originally comes from Austria. A full bodied wine with light spice, firm tannins and light acidity. This hybrid is a 20th century cross of Blaufränkisch and St. Laurent. Zweigelt, like Zinfandel, is a grape of real potential. Both are cultivated primarily in one part of the world but could do as well elsewhere. Niagara Canada is starting to produce Zweigelt wines and should do well, given that their climate is similar to Austria's.

If WIFI is bad, why don't they tell us?

Could it be that there are health problems related to the technology?

Judging by the warnings from Switzerland’s Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) website, it seems that the Swiss health officials might have some insider information – possibly from the World Health Organization that is also based in Switzerland. The WHO is the clearing house for microwave research – right?

If the WHO’s scientists, who live and work in Switzerland, find something is wrong, they will surely want to tell their own citizens and protect their family and children – right? Is this the reason why they have one of the better microwave safety standards in the world?

To make an appointment, call or email Paul at the contact info in the white box. Included are houses, apartments, townhouses, and condominiums. We also do other types of inspections; see below.

A typical inspection includes examinations of the entire dwelling from an electromagnetic standpoint. We use professional meters and measuring devices to find out where the "hot spots" are.

We will identify electromagnetic fields, radio frequencies, and dirty electricity.

For our surveys, we use professional EMF meters to track EMFs to their source. First we will give you a verbal summary of our findings. Then we'll provide the results of the survey in a  written report. It will show the location and intensity of EMFs within the property and give practical steps on how they can be eliminated or avoided at minimal cost. One of the solutions we will recommend is the installation of Graham-Stetzer filters in your place. They filter out much of the dangerous high frequency energy. We're getting reports of health changing results from our clients.

The cost of a survey depends on the complexity of the situation, size of property and distance from our office in the GTA. Note, we view the GTA (Greater Toronto area) as "local."

EMF surveys start from as little as $300 and neighbouring properties may be able to share the cost of a survey.  Please email us for details and a competitive estimate.

My recent visit to Gigondas, Rhône, France. Beautiful Gigondas village ...

My recent visit to Gigondas, Rhône, France.

Beautiful Gigondas village, in the Southern Rhône, is a setting of stone edifices, narrow lanes and steep hills.

I am here to taste the iconic wines of the area: Gigondas, Vacqueyras, & Beaumes de Venise. I’m finding truly excellent and affordable wines here. The further south I go in my travels of the area, the more robust and serious the wines become. Northern Rhône wines are structured, elegant, delicate beauties. Southern Rhône wines are big, fruit driven, and food friendly.

This charming old village is presided over by 11th-century Ste. Catherine's church, sitting up high, with its clock tower, belfry and old sundial. It's a fairly large complex of buildings and grounds still in operation. The narrow cobblestone streets below are lined with stone houses and shops.

While in the village, be sure to dine at Carré Gourmand restaurant. I ordered a medley of appetizers and enjoyed them with 2008 La Syrah de Pénélope Gigondas. Dark and mysterious, exuding a dusty, leathery, dark berry bouquet with flavours of blackberries, vanilla bean & dark chocolate, with firm tannins. The finish is surprisingly soft, satisfying completely. An intriguing wine of Cotê du Rhone.

Astrophotography is fun. My photo of the M81 galaxy

Internet browser, remotely point the telescope to target, select exposure time (this one was 600 seconds), run script. I am sitting in Ontario. The telescope is on a 2200 meter mountain in New Mexico. 5 minutes after I close the shutter, the image is in my hand. I am very happy with my first deep space photograph.

Here is M81, a spiral galaxy in Ursa Major, along with key info about my session, and conditions at the observatory site.

Cannonau Di Sardegna Riserva 2008, Sella & Mosca. Very nice.

P284

Cannonau Di Sardegna Riserva 2008, Sella & Mosca. Very nice! Cannonau is another name for Grenache. This appealing wine starts with aromas of leather and reveals black raspberry, tart black cherry, spice, wild berries, & spicy smoke. It is medium to full-bodied, with earthy, toasty flavours and firm tannins. We enjoyed it with barbecued steak; and it will do fine with strong cheeses and Italian sausage.

Letter to the press on "dirty electricity"

Originally addressed to the press, this letter is full of timely info for all of us...

I believe the information available on this web site regarding the issue of "dirty electricity" in our homes, offices and schools may be of interest to you and merit further investigation.

Most people are not aware that electrical pollution — otherwise referred to as "dirty electricity" or "radio wave sickness" — exists, let alone are they are aware of how if affects the body.

Generated primarily by electronic devices (computers, televisions, energy efficient lighting) as well as the return flow of power through hydro lines, electrical pollution flows through our homes and, when measuring above a certain level, is internalized by the body.

The damaging effects manifest themselves in a variety of ways, including chronic fatigue, depression, headaches, body aches and pains, ringing in the ears, dizziness, impaired sleep, memory loss and confusion.

For the sake of giving this issue more context, allow me to provide some background. Electricity distribution systems were set up in North America to carry linear 60 amp loads. This was acceptable provided the system included only simple light bulbs and motors, which run for long periods of time at predictable levels.

Introduce modern electronics and the accompanying demands on the system, and suddenly there are larger fluctuations which create harmonics and place much greater loads on the neutral wires of the system. As these neutral wires were not designed to carry that much energy, the excess energy is transferred through the ground and into our homes.

Granted, the reasons for my investigation into this issue began after I developed a persistent ringing in my left ear in the summer of 2004.

With a little investigation and luck, I met with Dr. Magda Havas from Trent University in Peterborough. She had been researching the effects of electrical pollution on the body and was working with Dave Stetzer in Wisconsin, an internationally recognized electrical engineer who also suffered from electrical sensitivity.

To cope with this problem, Stetzer had developed electronic filters (Graham-Stetzer filters) in conjunction with Dr Martin Graham (University of Berkley, Professor Emeritus) that removed the 'dirty electricity' from the home environment.

Following his lead, I sampled the filters (which plug directly into standard electrical outlets) in my home. Within a week, the ringing in my ear had notably subsided, so I placed more filters throughout my house. The change in my home has since been remarkable, not to mention the fact my young children are calmer and life seems less stressful.

Currently, Dr. Magda Havas at Trent University is the only professional researching the effects these filters. She has just completed a study of MS sufferers and found that at least 60% of people experience relief in their symptoms.

Dr. Havas has also found that diabetics (her current study) experience a lower fasting blood sugar level (for Type I, Type II and pre-Diabetics), and thus require less insulin.

Tinnitus sufferers have experienced a relief in symptoms (see PDF: Dirty Electricity and Electrical Hypersensitivity: Five Case Studies, World Health Organization Workshop on Electrical Hypersensitivity, 25-26 October, 2004, Prague, Czech Republic). Dr Havas can be reached at Trent University, 748-1011 ext. 1232 or by email at mhavas@trentu.ca.

For the sake of follow-up, I've also included a number of other contacts in case one of your producers cares to conduct any preliminary research:

Brad Blumbergs is a young man in Oshawa with progressive MS who believes that Graham-Stetzer have dramatically improved his life. He can be reached at 905-430-1331.

Michelle Illiatovich"s daughter is electrically sensitive and has the filters installed at her school and her home. She can be contacted at 416-485-3948 and illiatovitch@look.ca.

Rose Smith, a breast cancer survivor whose symptoms return if she is not in an electrically clean environment, would also be willing to discuss the matter. She can be reached at 905-735-8455.

Dave Stetzer is always very available to speak about the filters and the effect they have on the environment. He can be reached at Stetzer Electric, 608-989-2571 (Wisconsin) or at dave@stetzerelectric.com.

Martin Weatherall, from Bright, Ontario, is battling Hydro One with regards to the ground current flowing through his home (documented using gauss meters, performed by Dave Stetzer). I have a copy of his letter to the Health Minister, requesting a response to his particular situation, if required. He can be reached at weather@golden.net or at 519-463-6251.
Thank you for taking the time to look at this web site material. If you require any further information or would like to contact me directly, I look forward to discussing the matter further.

What is a STETZERiZER Filter? Graham Stetzer filters help reduce the harmonics from your electrical environment

STETZERiZER® Filter

Stetzerfilter
The STETZERiZER® Filter is based on 100 years of science and power principles. This design focuses on the needs of our customers in homes, offices and schools. The STETZERiZER® filters harmonics and other high frequency current (trash) from the electrical environment, reducing the potential for leakage into the human environment and creating additional trash in non-liner loads (televisions, computers, variable frequency drives, energy-efficient lighting, etc.).

Overview

In a typical alternating current (AC) power line, undesirable pollution often occurs. The effects of transients (electrical surges) and harmonics generated, oscillating at frequencies higher than 60 cycles per second on the power line are prevalent today. This pollution comes from non-linear loads and for example, can be caused by a switched power supply, motors or appliances that send high frequency signals into the line. Nonlinear loads are produced by electronic devices such as computers, printers, switching on and off, capacitors switching off lines to balance loads, trees brushing hydro lines, and faults on circuits. Harmonics are often called electrical noise and produce the humming, buzzing sound around poles and lines, and radio noise heard near electrical power lines. These high frequency signals from harmonics and transients are radiated into your home or office environment.
At 60 Hz the filters act as capacitors and normally marginally improve the power factor of the customer load, which are normally slightly inductive.

Typical Home Installation

Filters are designed to be installed throughout the home in a pattern that corresponds to the distributed nature of the need. For example, installing two filters close to a desktop computer or a television is normally appropriate and effective. Installing filters, normally from two to six, close to the input power panel is recommended to address high frequency currents entering on the power lines. The total number of filters required depends on the size of the home, the amount of electrical equipment, and the quality of the power from the grid. Twenty filters are normally adequate for a “typical” house.
Installing an inadequate number of filters tends to result in overloaded filters, leading to an ineffective solution. The preferred installation method is to be guided by the STETZERiZER® Microsurge Meter, which measures the amount of high frequency energy present. Readings of 30 or lower indicate an acceptable environment, while readings of 50 or higher indicate a need for additional filters. Readings between 30 and 50 are marginally acceptable, but should be reduced if anyone in the area is electrically sensitive.
As referenced in the STETZERiZER® Filter FAQs, a typical home requires about 20 filters before its environment is effectively “cleaned up”. While your home may require a different number than this, we recommend purchasing 20 filters to start. We understand that this may be a substantial investment, but after years of experience, our results speak for themselves.
In order to give you best results, we use the STETZERiZER® Microsurge Meter when we help you install these filters. The filters are available from us.

What is EMF?

We live in an invisible ocean of electromagnetic field radiation that constantly bombards us. This radiation is called EMF (Electromagnetic Fields). It can also be called Electromagnetic Radiation (EMR). People are coming forward in increasing numbers with sensitivities to these radiation waves. This condition is often described as ES.

What are the sources of EMF?

The following can cause sensitivities and are potentially harmful long-term:

  • Electrical wiring in home & office
  • Fluorescent lights
  • Computers, monitors and laptops
  • Photocopiers
  • WiFi
  • Cordless and mobile phones
  • Cell Phone towers
  • Televisions

What can you do about it?
